Why Can’t Bathroom Decor Be More Fun!?
The bathroom can be one of the most fun places in your house to decorate – if you have a fun attitude about it!
Let’s face it – bathrooms are not our favorite place. They can be associated with some pretty messy things and who in the world actually ENJOYS cleaning their bathroom!? NOT ME! However, if you live with 3 other people – like I do – cleaning the bathroom regularly is essential but I digress…
Recently I have started realizing just how much time we all spend in the bathroom. I know I dedicate a good portion of my morning routine to this room because of my mess of a mane * #mermaidhair #longhairdontcare * and my attempt at applying makeup. In fact, our bathroom seems to be the room that Anthony and I get to ourselves and have our most meaningful conversations some weeks while he showers and I put away laundry (our closet is off of our master bath) or do my hair. Actually, now that I think about it – we made sure that the kiddos’ bathroom was a fun place for them when we moved last year. We went out and got some minor but fun decorations, picked a fun but neutral shower curtain and it quite honestly is one of the cutest spaces in the house. So why didn’t we do the same with our half bath and our master bath?! Ugh. Good thing I am always looking for an empty wall to fill and inspiration for these projects have been sitting on my Pinterest boards for MONTHS!
First things first – our half bath.
We kept this pretty simple when we moved in, blues and grays were the main colors we stuck with though because we did some yard sale-ing and found a pretty awesome oil painting that ended up in there because we really didn’t have another spot for it in our decor. But I wasn’t satisfied with that and I wanted to make something a little cheeky to spice up the space. Awkwardly enough, we have 3 toilets in this house and I’d say this is the most popular toilet for this ‘activity’ so it just seemed like fate…
I took a small canvas I had laying around and got to work – sketching out the quote and flourish for spacing purposes. I got a little over eager here and lettered immediately which I shouldn’t have done but it ended up okay.
After I had everything drawn out with the sharpie (I don’t letter very well with a paintbrush – YET!) I grabbed a paint pen and added a blue detail flourish. Here is where the regret set in for lettering so quickly… the piece looked completely BORING. The white background was killing me especially since all of our walls are white since we rent – boo!
After frantically texting images to my sister and bestie I got some giggles and then a brilliant idea. I had just given my bestie a piece where I ‘sponged on’ paint with a plastic bag giving a crackly look. So I mixed some gray – grabbed a plastic bag all bunched up in my hand and dabbed away. It was the perfect space filler and I only needed to touch up the letters a little bit after everything dried. WIN! (Thanks, Michelle!)
Overall, a fun little piece. It adds a little spice to our half bath, the kiddos giggled when they figured out what it said and any company that has seen it have a silly grin on their face when they come back out when they are done. Mission accomplished!
Moving on: Master Bath.
I have actually been wanting to do a variation of this project for a few YEARS now. The 2+ years I lived alone I had high hopes on making my space super fun and unique and then I found that I liked sitting on my couch, eating chips and salsa while watching Netflix a whole lot more! However, since moving in with my crew about 10 months ago I do my best to make time for *me* and my happy place truly is with a paintbrush in my hand! So on Fridays when I can work from home I use my lunch break to get in my creative fix – which then usually spills over into the weekend/early next week until I finish up the project!
This one was simple but has added a lot to our space! I started with a bigger canvas – really wanted to go for more of a statement in our bathroom since really only the two of us see it. A solid coat of my go-to background color (Team Neutral for the win!) and I was ready to letter. I sketched in pencil first because I knew this was a bigger piece and that a paintbrush would be a necessity since I wanted a specific color.
I took my time here and actually exercised some patience which is so rare for me – especially on personal projects. I let the words dry between shaky strokes and took the time to go back and polish the lines.
After I was finally happy with the letters I moved to a fun little detail – BUBBLES! Using random items around my house (a candle lid, a plastic toy, and my eye drop bottle) I traced out some circles and followed that with my white paint pen to finalize the design.
**Note: I did spray this piece with an acrylic sealer since it is in the bathroom we shower in and I didn’t want the moisture in the air to ruin it after a few weeks!
Adding this to our Master Bath was so worth it – every time I see it I smile a little. Again, it’s cheeky and that is what I like most about it. It hangs right above our towels for our shower and I think it fits in perfectly!
